Wheat Field & Rainbow by Kathleen Connally
Normally, I use Flickr photos for the photo of the day, but this was just too gorgeous to pass up. I highly recommend checking out the larger version linked above as well.

zachstern has some really cool infrared photographs - this is a recent one. The monochrome effect is very effective, although I think I would have cropped it slightly off the bottom...
I love the iconic style and vibrant colors in this shot.
Man, it took forever to find a large pic today... I highly recommend checking out all the Runners Up. There were lots of great pictures that just weren't very big at all, unfortunately....
My paperwork has finally been straightened out, and my flight to Boston is scheduled for Sunday, so I'll soon be on my way (finally)! Wish me luck! :-P

Well, sorry for the long haitus. Paperwork has been a real drag lately.... Plus, I'm on dialup at my folks place, which makes looking at Flickr a minor torture. But I'm chillin' in the downtown coffeeshop right now, so you all get your Pic of the Day!

Today's pics are in memory of all the Hokies injured or killed in yesterday's shooting. So far, it looks like no one I know was involved, thank goodness. But everyone I know from Tech is shook up and could use your thoughts and prayers. Classes have been cancelled for the rest of the week, and hopefully those scarred by this tragedy can begin to heal...
This is the roof of the campus chapel, which is recessed into the hill surrounding the drill field. The pylons are dedicated to all the Hokies who have fallen in past wars.

I'm sure some of you have noticed my negligence in not getting the Pic of the Day out recently. My apologies... I've been very busy this week. For those who haven't found out already, I've officially accepted a contract position in Japan for the next 6+ months! The initial paperwork is in, and the appropriate people have been notified, so I can make this public now. :-)
Today's Pics are all from Japan, in honor of my upcoming trip. I'm not sure what my new work schedule will be like, or what level of internet access I'll have. But I'll do my best to keep up our daily pic selections while I'm overseas.
Today's Pic of the Day is a shot of the Tokyo metropolis from the Roppongi Hills Mori building. My ex-girlfriend works in this building (last I'd heard) and we made a trip to the observation deck on my last trip to Tokyo. Highly recommended if you're into high-places - my ears popped on the way up and down in the elevator!

http://flickr.com/photos/yayatan/35736937/ - Another shot from a high-rise in Tokyo. This time, one of the Metropolitan Government Building towers (not sure if it's North tower or South tower...) My ex-girlfriend and I also visisted this observation deck.
http://flickr.com/photos/ajpscs/360561093/ - A shot of an above-average work of art on a Harajuku girl. Harajuku is a district in Tokyo popular with young cos-players. Many of them hang out just to have their photos taken.
http://flickr.com/photos/sakura-kame/309418976/ - A cool aerial shot of Mt. Fuji! You can see the path up the side of the mountain. With any luck, I'll get a chance to climb Mt. Fuji while I'm in-country.
http://flickr.com/photos/3amfromkyoto/70597445/ - I don't know this location specifically, but it looks like a very nice temple/shrine complex in Kyoto.
I was in for some moody landscapes today...

Today's theme is Castles, but no "Look it's a Disneyland castle on a bright Spring day" shots! Nothing more boring than a stereotypical shot, eh? Hope you enjoy!

I actually saw this shot last night while I was looking at my contacts' photos. I just love the contrast between the bright airy sky and the dark foreboding building...
Runners Up
Today's only Runner Up is from Patricio Orozco-Contreras. This man takes incredible portraits!

Sorry for getting this out late to everyone. I was out of the house most of the day. :-)
Today's photo is a little short for background use, but it should work ok on a widescreen monitor. It just seemed too cool to pass up though...

My usual technique was having a hard time turning up images large enough for our daily pic. So I started going through my contact's photos, hoping one would jump out at me. I like this one more than the candidates from the usual pool! Plus it's a ready-made desktop with the large negative space on the left. :-)

I'm going to start allowing comments on the Pic of the Day entries. We'll see how much spam I get...
The colors are muted on this one, but I think that's part of it's charm...
I love shots of animals with personality.
Today's picture is an example of Infrared (IR) photography. In film cameras, it's possible to buy IR sensitive film and use a special IR filter to capture unusual images. In the digital world, many cameras can be disassembled and reconfigured to capture IR images instead of visible light images. I've been watching zachstern's photostream because he has a lot of cool IR images from a $30 camera he reconfigured. Today's pic is courtesy of zachstern & his IR camera...
Today gets two pictures from the same photographer, depending on your tastes. He's got some pretty cool stuff in his photo stream if you want to check the rest of them out...
An interesting HDR shot for a change of pace. HDR is High Dynamic Range photography, which means areas that would normally be all black or all white in an image are captured using extra images, and then a single picture is build that includes a larger tonal range than is normally possible with a camera.
